Professional Experience
33 years involved in commercial/industrial/rural finance and banking including a significant exposure to distressed business, recoveries and turnarounds. My background includes roles with all of NZ’s major banks as well as debtor finance, property & asset finance.
Career Summary
My early career, following graduation, was as a new business representative in the UK finance industry with bank-owned asset finance companies funding commercial, industrial and rural plant and machinery. In this role, we also engaged in asset recovery work including repossessions of financed vehicles and plant. From 1991 in NZ, initially I was employed in the commercial/agri area for Trust Bank Southland, moving to Trust Bank Canterbury in 1993 to take up my first full time credit recovery role (the Trust Bank Group is now part of Westpac).
In subsequent years, I worked for ASB (Relationship Manager); Westpac (Franchise Relationships Manager); BNZ (Relationship Manager “Partner”) and 10 years with ANZ in Credit Recovery, Quality Assurance (like audit) and Project roles. I also spent 6 years as a Business Development Manager in Debtor Finance and a couple of years as CEO for a Christchurch-based Finance Company.
Personal Summary
Born and raised in Manchester, UK, my wife & I emigrated with our young son to Invercargill, NZ in 1991. I had previously enjoyed a couple of years there as a primary school pupil in the 1970s. In 1993, I moved to Christchurch with the Trust Bank Group and have lived and worked in Christchurch since.
I am married with three grown-up children and outside of work I enjoy playing guitar, playing the round ball game of football (I gave up rugby at age 20!) and taking short trips in our campervan.
